National Weekend of Prayer and Action for Elder Justice Events

National Weekend of Prayer and Action for Elder Justice Events

The National Weekend of Prayer and Action for Elder Justice is coming up this weekend, June 6 to June 8! Held annually the weekend before World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, this event provides a great opportunity for faith communities to break the silence and raise awareness about elder abuse using non-denominational prayers and messages.

Faith communities can play a critical role in breaking the silence around elder abuse and supporting older adults who may be experiencing abuse.

Why Faith Communities Matter in Working for Elder Justice:

  • up to 89% of older adults are actively involved in faith communities, and many faith communities are deeply engaged in the lives of their congregants.
  • in some communities, faith is particularly central and vibrant, and faith leaders are deeply trusted
  • faith communities can play a vital role in recognizing possible abuse, discussing suspect abuse with congregants, and providing them with information, support, and spiritual guidance

Share this information with your faith communities, who will, in turn, learn more and share one, two, or all three prayers this weekend - in a service, on a bulletin board, or through social media. Make sure to capture your activities on the WEAAD events map!

About this Event

We'll be honoring all of the hosts, meal providers, and partners who made the 36th anniversary Interfaith Winter Shelter season a success. In providing a safe, clean, warm, and respectful respite from inclement weather and home-cooked meals served with love, this annual collaborative effort offered essential relief to up to 80 guests per night, who otherwise call the streets their home.

Breakfast Host:

CHEFS (Conquering Homelessness through Employment in Food Services)

Featured Presenter:
Adrian Tirtanadi of Open Door Legal will present a new study that suggests that access to civil legal representation may be the most cost-effective way to reduce homelessness.

Come to learn more about the research, how it applies to San Francisco, and the work of Open Door Legal to pioneer universal access to civil legal representation. We'll also discuss how the Mayor's proposed budget impacts this work.

Open Door Legal serves clients with a wide range of legal problems, including: housing issues, such as evictions, discrimination, and habitability (inadequate heating, plumbing, or electricity); family issues, including domestic violence, child custody, child support and visitation; and consumer issues, including consumer fraud and property confiscation. All the cases are handled in civil, not criminal, courts. No fees are charged.

Last year, Open Door Legal served more than 400 Bayview clients. Today, it has four storefront offices throughout San Francisco that encompass about two-thirds of the city’s low-income population.

About this Event

When Governor Gavin Newsom took office, he placed a moratorium on executions in California, marking a bold stand against the death penalty. Now, with just 18 months remaining in his term, a powerful coalition of faith leaders, civil rights advocates, and legal experts is urging him to take the next historic step: granting universal clemency to all individuals on death row.

Join us for a timely and urgent conversation on the moral, legal, and human rights case for clearing California’s death row. This presentation will explore the legacy and impact of universal clemency grants, walk through the clemency process in our state, and make the case for why the time to act is now.

Together, we can help shape a more just and compassionate California.

About this Event

Virtual Educational Workshops:

SB 4 Housing Accelerator Lab

“Fast-Tracking Affordable Housing on Faith Land in San Francisco”

Funded by a Crankstart grant, the SFIC/DCG Virtual Event Series launches the SB4 Accelerator Lab—a bold new initiative designed to empower San Francisco congregations with land to take the next step toward building affordable housing.

Open to the public and tailored for faith-based stakeholders, this virtual workshop series will educate and inspire participants to harness the power of SB4, California’s new legislation that fast-tracks affordable housing on land owned by religious institutions.

Through expert-led sessions and real-world case studies, congregations will gain the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to begin or advance their housing development journey.
