Event Calendar

As a sanctuary congregation, Congregation Sherith Israel will join with congregations throughout the U.S. to observe the annual HIAS Refugee Shabbat and to reaffirm our active support for immigrant people. We are honored to welcome as Kabbalat Shabbat speakers, Kateryna Holub and Oleksandr Zemliachenko, who fled Ukraine, and came to California to rebuild their lives and to heal. Both computer scientists, they have fascinating stories to tell us about their lives in Ukraine before the war, and the efforts of Ukrainian immigrants in California. They will share rare insights into the strategies by which the Ukrainians in their home country are fighting for freedom from invading Russian forces.

The Jesuit mystic, Jean-Pierre de Caussade wrote that the sacrament of the present moment is “full of infinite treasures. It contains far more than you have the capacity to hold.” What happens when we wake up to this present moment? How can it be sacramental? How does God become manifest? And what of us--do we linger and ‘wait for the grace’ or check our watches and flee the moment? This workshop is devoted to the practice of the present moment and perhaps finding a glimpse of those treasures God is offering us. Through spiritual exercises, short presentations and group discussion, we’ll learn from each other and from the Spirit dwelling among us when we gather to pray.

Lisa Sharon Harper will give an author talk followed by a Q&A, facilitated by Rev. Marci Glass. The audience will be able to write questions.

The webinar will address the importance of benchmarking or creating a snapshot of your facilities’ energy use to shape your congregation’s plan to cut energy costs and care for our Sacred Earth.
