Created and directed by Andrea Assaf
Featuring acclaimed Syrian opera singer Lubana Al Quntar
and Turkish composer and violinist Eylem Basaldi

11Reflections: San Francisco is part of a new national series of performance works, Eleven Reflections on the Nation, devised by Andrea Assaf. The project draws on her seminal work, Eleven Reflections on September, an episodic, multimedia performance on Arab American identity, Wars on/of Terror, and “the constant, quiet rain of death / amidst beauty” in a post- 9/11 world. In each participating city, the project engages local artists and community members who have been affected by post-9/11 policies to contribute their stories, illuminating our collective experiences since 2001—from the fall of the Twin Towers, to the U.S. wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, to the Muslim Ban, to the funding of genocide in Palestine.

In collaboration with Golden Thread Productions and participating artists, Andrea Assaf will direct a new work that reflects the experiences of communities in the Bay Area. National and international guest artists include acclaimed Syrian opera singer Lubana Al Quntar, and Turkish composer/violinist Eylem Basaldi—on stage with San Francisco Bay Area artists and community members!

Co-produced by Golden Thread Productions, Brava for Women in the Arts, and Art2Action and in collaboration with Aviva Arts.

Will you be the voice for a child in foster care?

"My CASA volunteering gives my life MEANING and is also FUN.  I can schedule it to suit my calendar.  My CASA youth and I jointly choose what to do, so we both have fun. What else am I doing (work, exercise, movie-going, hanging with friends, travel, hiking, biking, cooking, etc.) that could possibly be as meaningful and satisfying as creating an authentic, warm connection with a young person in need of acceptance?"   Monica, current CASA Volunteer

Breakfast Host: Compassionate Community Care

Welcome/Reading of Interfaith Statement: Michael G. Pappas, Executive Director, SFIC

Reflective Moment: Father Donal Godfrey, Chaplain, University of San Francisco

Topic: Humanizing Immigration

with USF Law Professor Bill Ong Hing

and CARECEN San Francisco Executive Director Lariza Dugan Cuadra

Facilitated by SFIC Board Member Tessa Rouverol Callejo

Faith Journey: Ignatius Bau, Independent Public Policy Consultant

Topic: Humanizing Immigration

Please join us for a timely and important conversation on immigration issues with Professor Bill Ong Hing, a national immigration expert, law professor, and author, and Lariza Dugan Cuadra, a local and national community leader and director of the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN SF), facilitated by SFIC Board Member Tessa Rouverol Callejo.

The speakers will discuss the current political climate, the underlying root causes of migration today, how mass detention and deportation separate immigrants and their families, the unique role of the faith community historically and currently, and the issues that are most significant for our immigrant community members. They will address the danger and impact of highly polarizing, racially charged, and dehumanizing narratives that depict people who migrate as a threat to community health and well-being, rather than human beings seeking a new life for themselves and their families and/or asylum as they flee violence and other drivers in their countries of origin.

Our speakers will help us to see the opportunities for welcoming and supporting migrants in our local community and moving towards a more just, and humane set of policies and practices that align with core tenets in our many faith traditions.

Four times a year, Sinai Memorial Chapel invites the Northern California Jewish community to drop off sheymot, discarded sacred items, that were once used for a holy purpose and now, for any reason, need to be discarded into a Genizah, a reserved area, with dignity.

The next time to bring in your sacred items for burial will take place on Monday, October 28, 2024 from 9am to 4pm.

  • SORT IN ADVANCE: Please sort and place all items into a cardboard box prior to arriving at the cemetery. There is not dignified space for sorting at any of our cemeteries.
  • NO UNNECESSARY ITEMS: Skull Caps (Kippot, kippah, yarmulke or koppel), Jewish newspapers, Hebrew language books, flyers, or secular in purpose items.

About this Event

In this time of increased polarization, imminent threats, and potential political violence, it is more important than ever for partners from diverse faiths and communities to stand united in our commitment to peace, to one another, and to a pluralistic and multiracial democratic society. As such, the San Francisco Interfaith Council, in partnership with San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, and the Asian Pacific Islander-Jewish Round Table are hosting this special pre-election briefing for community and faith partners.

Join us on October 29th at 7pm for: Solidarity and Security: United For Peace and Democracy Across Faith and Community, a virtual conversation moderated by Michael Pappas, Executive Director of the San Francisco Interfaith Council.

Our panelists will be David Chiu, City Attorney of San Francisco, Rafael Brinner, Senior Director of Community Security for Bay Area Jewish Federation, Molly Joser Community Security Advisor for Bay Area Jewish Federation, and Peter Adams, SVP of Research and Design at the News Literacy Project.

The program will focus on building peace and strengthening our democracy through community solidarity and share best practices for security and misinformation related to the national election.
